Flights canceled to and from Austin as winter storm hits Northeast

Airlines have canceled four flights scheduled for Thursday afternoon between Austin and cities affected by a nasty winter storm that’s moving into the Northeast, an Austin-Bergstrom International Airport official said.  United Airlines canceled a flight departing for Newark, N.J., and another arriving from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, airport spokesman Jason Zielinski said. Jet Blue canceled a flight departing for Boston and one arriving from Newark, Zielinski said.

According to the Misery Map at, there were more than 1,900 cancellations within the U.S. Friday and more than 1,400 delays.   A majority of those flights are coming in and out of New York. LaGuardia reported 36 percent of its flights Friday were cancelled.

A storm dropped a blanket of light, powdery snow across the Northeast and  ushered in frigid temperatures Friday that were unusual even for cities  accustomed to blasts of winter weather. The storm, which shut down major  highways temporarily and grounded flights, was blamed for at least 11 deaths as  it swept across the eastern half of the country.
