The fight for and against SOPA, PIPA

Posted 1/18/2012 12:29:00 PM

If you’ve been paying attention to the increasingly heated debate over the “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA), you may have noticed a significant spike in today’s news about the “Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011,” or PROTECT IP Act (PIPA, for short). Newsletters and blog posts have flooded in, with the declaration that “PIPA is the new SOPA.” But what, exactly, is PIPA? And why is it the ‘new SOPA’? Here, a (relatively) quick primer on the differences and similarities between these two pieces of vexed anti-piracy legislation, and why major Internet players are blacking out their sites this Wednesday, January 18, in an attempt to keep either of these bills from becoming law.

What are SOPA and PIPA?

SOPA and PIPA are, essentially, two versions of the same anti-piracy bill. SOPA is the House of Representative’s version ...

Operation Blue Santa is a 501(c)(3) – non-profit, community based corporation, organized by the Austin Police Department, with support from the Texas National Guard, the Austin Fire Department, the Austin Utilities Department and Austin EnergyThis charitable outreach began in 1972 when two patrol officers realized that some families on the patrol beat would not have gifts or food for their children at Christmas.

Each year we provide each family we serve with a full holiday meal, complete with turkey/chicken and all the trimmings, and wrapped Christmas gifts for each child under age 14. Our service began with about 20 needy families, this year we will easily serve over 3500 families. This is only possible because of the goodwill and big hearts of Austin’s citizens, businesses, and civic groups that support us each ...

The 2012 U.S. Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas is no longer in jeopardy of losing its November 18 date on next year's Formula One calendar.   According to a news release from the FIA's World Motor Sport Council on Wednesday, "The 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar was confirmed as previously published." The WMSC held its final meeting of the year in New Delhi.

The FIA released a confirmed calendar for the 2012 season in August, with the date of the USGP switched from June 17 to Nov. 18, making it the penultimate race of the season. But the USGP was in danger of being removed from the schedule due to financial reasons.

Obama threatens to veto changes to $1.2T in cuts

Posted 11/22/2011 4:58:00 AM

President Barack Obama said Monday he will veto any effort to get rid of automatic spending cuts that would begin to take effect in 2013 if Congress can't find other ways of trimming government deficits.  Those spending cuts include significant reductions to the Pentagon that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said would be devastating to the military.

Obama issued his threat an hour after leaders of Congress' deficit-reduction supercommittee announced that they had failed to reach agreement on cutting the debt. The inability of the bipartisan committee to meet its deadline means the government is facing about $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts that start to kick in in January 2013.

Obama said the threat of those reductions should remain in place to maintain pressure on Congress to find a compromise. He said the only way the automatic spending cuts would not take place is if Congress gets back to work ...

Study: Rich get a lot richer, outpace middle class

Posted 10/27/2011 5:50:00 AM

The richest 1 percent of Americans have been getting far richer over the last three decades while the middle class and poor have seen their after-tax household income only crawl up in comparison, according to a government study.

Average after-tax income for the top 1 percent of U.S. households almost quadrupled, up 275 percent, from 1979 to 2007, the Congressional Budget Office found. For people in the middle of the economic scale, after-tax income grew by just 40 percent. Those at the bottom experienced an 18 percent increase.

The report, based on IRS and Census Bureau data, comes as the Occupy Wall Street movement protests corporate bailouts and the gap between the haves and have-nots. Demonstrators call themselves "the 99 percent."

"The distribution of after-tax income in the United States was substantially more unequal in 2007 than in 1979," CBO Director Doug Elmendorf said in a blog post. "The share ...

Rising in the polls: Cain says philosophy trumps foreign policy deficit

Posted 10/13/2011 11:03:00 AM

Republican presidential contender Herman Cain says his foreign policy philosophy is more important than his lack of foreign policy experience.  The former CEO, who touts his business background, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Wednesday that as president he would promote what he called "peace through strength and clarity."

Cain said the United States needs to clarify who its friends and enemies are, stop giving money to enemies and "let the rest of the world know who our friends are that we are going to stand by."

Cain accused the Obama administration of failing to make clear who the U.S. would stand by. He said that was one reason for an alleged Iranian plot unveiled by U.S. authorities Tuesday to kill the Saudi ambassador in Washington.
