ACLU questions AISD’s plans for single-sex campuses

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas is questioning the Austin school district’s decision to transform two East Austin middle schools into single-sex schools in 2014, saying the decision appears based on “pseudo-science.” The ACLU said the district is forcing single-sex schools on parents and students who don’t want them, and the organization has filed a four-page open records request into the details of the planned conversion.

Adriana Piñon, an attorney with the ACLU, said the group is concerned the decision may have been made based on stereotypes about girls and boys “that raise constitutional concerns,” including that the students may be deprived of their rights to equal learning opportunities. “This scheme has been involuntarily foisted only on low-income families,” said Piñon, who added there is no data that shows coeducation is the problem at these schools.

A student survey conducted by the district of 500 sixth and seventh graders at the schools showed 81 percent were against the switch to single-sex schools. Another survey showed the community was divided, with 40 percent of those interviewed supporting the idea.
