The X Games are a good fit for Austin, officials said today in announcing that the city will host the extreme sports competition starting next May through 2017.
At a press conference at Circuit of the Americas where many of the games will be held, Mayor Lee Leffingwell said he hopes the games will boost awareness of Austin around the globe.
"Austin is very proud for the next four years to be host of the X Games," Leffingwell said. "We're going to have a lot of folks focused on Austin, even more than they are now."
Leffingwell also said the crowds expected at the games would trigger the need for public transportation options to and from the events. Those details would be worked in time for the May event, Leffingwell said.
Scott Guglielmino, an executive with ESPN, did not say which specific events would be held in Austin, but some would be tailored to the city's interests. He said the sprawling circuit and city would be a fitting venue for the international competition.
"When we saw the facility it was very clear that we needed to get here," Guglielmino said. "We stand here today very excited about moving the X Games here."
