Affidavit gives new details on fatal officer-involved shooting

An Austin police officer tried to handcuff John Schaefer in the moments before the officer fatally shot Schaefer twice in the chest this month, according to an affidavit for a warrant to search Schaefer’s home.

The document provides new details about the chain of events leading up to the 70-year-old man’s death.

Schaefer called 911 on March 1 to report that he had shot and killed a pit bull that attacked him, Police Chief Art Acevedo said during a news conference later that day.

Schaefer refused to put his gun in the duplex he owned before officers arrived although a dispatcher called him back and asked him to, Acevedo then said, and he refused again when officer Jonathan Whitted got there and said he needed to take control of the pistol tucked in Schaefer’s waistband while he investigated what happened.
