A new study by an Austin non-profit shows, when it comes to children in Texas with mental health problems, most appear to be left behind.
The study, Children’s Mental Health in Texas: A Diagnostic Test, released today by Texans Care for Children, shows that four out of five children diagnosed with a mental illness in Texas, don’t receive treatment. Executive Director Eileen Garcia-Matthews says “To the extent that children are not receiving preventative care and are not having medical professionals look out for those early warning signs…again we’re throwing children into crisis.” She says her organization and state lawmakers are working to change that.
Garcia-Matthews says the problems children face start early in life and as a result of mental/emotional issues, they’re repeating the first or second grade. She says some Texas children don’t get treatment until they get into the juvenile justice system. She says for some that’s the only place they’ve been treated, something she calls “a tragedy”.
Overall, when it comes to per capita spending on mental health treatment, Texas ranks 49th in the country.
