Cases of Whooping Cough on the Rise in Hays County
Newsroom
2/4/2010

Health Officials in Hays County say, this time last year, there was one case of pertussis, or whooping cough reported.  Debra Mahan, a nurse with the county’s Personal Health Department says, beginning last month, that changed dramatically. “We have 35 suspect cases, some that we’re investigating and some that we’re in the process of investigating.”

Mahan says a number of reports have come from Northern Hays County, including Kyle and Buda. Lately, she notes that reports are beginning to come in from Texas State University. She says all age groups are affected. That’s why the most important message is “…to get your children immunized, make sure that they’re up to date on their pertussis immunization.” Mahan adds that adults and adolescents should know that there’s a tetanus shot that has the whooping cough vaccine in it. It’s called T-dap.

To prevent whooping cough, Mahan offers these tips:

- cover your cough
- wash your hands often
- see your doctor immediately if you suspect you or a family member has whooping cough
- protect infants from coughing children and adults
- start childhood vaccinations on time and stay on schedule
- boost immunity to whooping cough in adolescents and adults by getting the vaccine, Tdap.
