There's now $8.7-million going to study environmental impacts and other preliminary design services for moving Union Pacific's freight off tracks in central Austin, thus opening the area up for more passenger rail.
"The federal government has a series of competitive grants that they are offering. There's the opportunities for something coming out of the legislature in the next legislative session," Bill Glavin, Director of TxDOT's Rail Division says.
Still unclear, though, is whether a proposed rail line would have enough ridership to support itself. If Capital MetroRail is any indication, it could be a costly venture. However, people in favor of the idea say it would alleviate traffic on I-35 if development was to occur along the rail stops.
