Texas Doctors Express Opposition to Sonogram Bill
Newsroom
3/2/2011

The bill would require doctors to perform a sonogram on a woman before she can have an abortion.  Physicians with the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists say they’re concerned about the effects the procedure could have on a developing fetus.

Dr. Lisa Hollier, incoming president of the American Congress of OB/GYNs, says doctors question why it’s being done.  “We believe that ultrasound should only be performed when there’s a solid medical indication for that ultrasound.”  Dr. Hollier says even then, only the lowest, possible, ultrasound exposure settings should be used.  She says that’s the only way to avoid potential risks to the fetus.

Dr. Matthew Romberg, an OB/GYN in Round Rock agrees.  He says the risk could result in a number of birth defects and adds that the procedure provides no health benefit to the unborn baby.

The bill has been given initial approval by the Senate and is now being considered by the Texas House.
