The shelter's Amber Roland says you can celebrate freedom today by granting independence to a pet. They currently have 326 cats and 222 dogs. One pet that shelter staff is surprised to still have after 117 days is Mae Mae, a mixed breed Labrador Retriever and Australian Kelpie.   Roland says the black and white 3-year-old is sweet, playful and well-mannered. 

Roland says they need to find good homes for as many pets as they can to achieve their "no kill" goal.

She also says to keep a close eye on your own pets today, in case people set off fireworks that could spook your animal.
