More pedestrians have been killed trying to cross Austin roads than ever before. Lieutenant Justin Newsome with the Austin police says they've been using their PEST, Pedestrian Enforcement Safety Team, to ticket both drivers and pedestrians who aren't following the rules, "It targeted crosswalks, both pedestrians not using them and drivers not adhereing to the laws that control those crosswalks.  And so we've dedicated numerous man hours and written thousands of citations in order to get the word and hopefully stop this senseless killing of people walking on the streets."

Lieutenant Newsome says so far, 28 pedestrians have died on Austin roads, 10 of which were crossing high speed roads, like I-35. Earlier this week, a San Marcos man died crossing I-35 - it's the 12th traffic death for that city this year.
