The Austin police department has secured a million dollars in federal grant money to clean up crime in the Rundberg area. The city is getting the first 300 thousand dollars of that million dollar grant this week. Assistant Chief Brian Manley with the Austin Police says the neighborhood accounts for 11 percent of the cities violent crime and seven percent of the cities property crime.

Assistant Chief Manley says the neighborhood qualified because of it's various problems. The grant will also do more than just clean up crime - it will also try to identify what's causing the crime and fix that as well. The police department is partnering with Dr. David Kirk with the University of Texas sociology department to figure out what is causing the crime in the neighborhood.
