Sparks fly at AISD school board meeting over race equity remarks

The Austin school board appears at odds over a proposal to turn two poor-performing east sides middle schools into single sex schools.

The trustees will have to vote on the issue by the end of the month. New board trustee Jayme Mathias is against it, "All of the data that we see is shows that students of color and students of a lower socio economic levels are not being served as perhaps other students are.  It seems that we as a board have a mandate to advance to better serve those students and their families."

That comment hit a nerve with Trustee Cheryl Bradley, "I did not become African American this morning, I've been African American all my life so I don't need you or anyone else to tell me about the race issues or equity in this city, I can tell you."

Bradley has long supported the idea of single gender schools, saying they give minority students a better chance at academic success.
