One local school leader is strengthening her push for single sex-schools following the death of an AISD middle-schooler.

Austin school board Trustee Cheryl Bradley says the death of Sophia Martinez on New Year's day is a stark reminder of the needs of children on the east side, "What is it that we can do with those students to say 'You've got a long life ahead of you, but to get there, there are choices that you have to make, there are decisions you're going to have to make, there are behaviors you're going to have to exemplify."

Bradley says that message is clearer when students don't have the distraction of the opposite sex. The school board is set to vote on increasing the number of single sex schools in the district at the end of the month.
