The state needs $4 billion more to pay for roads across Texas and build new ones.
That's what the head of the highway department has said. Tex-Dot's executive director says the state's booming economy and bulging population are taxing the highways. Terri Hall is a highway department watchdog and says lawmakers at the Capitol need to fix gas tax diversions, "We've dedicated the vehicle sales tax and ended tax diversions. We're real close to that four billion dollar figure that we need to properly fund our roads."
Hall predicts more debt and higher taxes if lawmakers let the highway funding formula stay as-is.
