'Mental Health First Aid' course is being conducted by Austin-Travis County Integral Care today. The agency's Kathleen Casey says the course teaches participants how to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis among other things, "It's targeted to the general public to educate them on the common signs and symptoms of mental illness and then it imparts a five part skill set on how to assess, how to listen, how to give reassurance and support and then most importantly how to encourage professional help."
Casey says you will become certified after the twelve hour course. Since they've started the program, they've certified over 800 people across Austin. The courses are offered at least once a month. She says they also travel to organizations to teach the course. You can get more information at IntegralCare.org.
