Study shows abuse of construction workers and illegal construction practices

A new study by a U-T Anthropology professor is showing widespread abuse of construction workers across the state. Dr. Shannon Speed shows workers across the state are not getting required safety training are among the violations. The report shows 61 percent of construction workers have not received basic safety training. Several lawmakers are preparing legislation that will address the problem.

Emily Timm with the Workers Defense Project says the 'Build a Better Texas' report shows one in five workers report an injury on the job and sixty percent say they have had no safety training. Austin is mentioned as a model for ordinances requiring work site safety training and required rest breaks.

The 'Build A Better Texas' study surveyed 12 hundred workers in the state's five largest metro areas. It mentions Austin has already created ordinances requiring rest breaks and worker safety training resulting in a 20 percent reduction in injuries on construction sites.
