An advocate tells the Texas House Appropriations Committee they need more money to provide care for kids in foster care. Nancy Holman with the Texas Alliance of Child and Family Services says right now, there is a 23 percent funding deficit for the non-profits who provide for kids in foster care. Holman says in the 15 years she's been with her agency, she's never seen a deficit at that level.
Holman says the non-profits who place the kids rely almost entirely on state funding. She says they want a 14 percent across the board rate increase in funding, but she says that will only take care of half the kids currently in foster care. Holman says they're in the process of overhauling the foster care system. She says the goal is to improve outcomes and accountability for children and building resources across the state so kids can stay in their home community.
