Austin Water says a compost pile at the Hornsby Bend Biosolids Plant in Southeast Austin that caught fire during last week's high winds is continuing to smolder a week later.
The utility's Jason Hill says the fire was extinguished very quickly, but the smoke continues to blanket the neighborhood. He says they are monitoring the pile and are in the process of trying to cool the pile down using special crews and equipment. Hill says it's not causing a visibility problem, but it is bothering neighbors who live there. He says the Austin Fire Department has tested the air quality and found it to be safe.
Hill says they're hoping the smoke will continue to dissipate by the end of the week.
