AFD: We're better prepared to deal with wildfires

The Austin Fire Department says they're in better shape today to deal with wildfires.

Chief Harry Evans tells the Public Safety Commission since the 2011 fires that destroyed thousands of acres across Central Texas, they have the okay to create a fire mitigation department and hire more firefighters.

Evans says they now have enough staff to be able to put four firefighters on each engine. He says they also have more units to help battle wildfire from the air with the approval of a specialized helicopter and a new police helicopter.

Two years ago, wildfires burned several thousand acres across Central Texas. Officials say continued drought may put the area under a similar threat this year.
