A new poll shows Texans don't want tougher gun laws, even though most support background checks for gun purchases. Texas Politics Project Director Jim Henson says although 78 percent of those surveyed support background checks on all gun purchases, 52 percent believe laws should be left alone or even made less strict.

Henson, who is the Co-Director for the UT/Texas Tribune Poll says they also asked about teachers carrying guns. He says Texans are closely divided when it comes to allowing public school teachers to carry guns, with 54 percent supporting the idea.

The poll asked the questions of 1,200 registered voters. Henson says when asked about loosening requirements to get a concealed handgun license, only 30 percent of Texans support it.
