Austin considering extra regulations for new home construction, driving up cost

Planners with the city of Austin have been working on making new homes more 'visitible' for people with disabilities.  Leon Barba is the building official with the city of Austin and says there are six proposed regulations that will be required in new homes.   Barba says lever handle doorknobs will also be required and half inch doorway thresholds. He says two story homes will also be required to have at least a half bath on the first floor.  He says they will also require no-step entrances.  He says the requirements are not the same as making a house A-D-A compliant which would be more expensive. The city council will begin hearing about the new visitibility requirements next month.
