City offers developers incentives for sidewalks
Increasing importance on enhancing downtown foot traffic

Ask any business downtown and they'll say street access is vital to their success. "There is no parking in downtown Austin, so it's all foot traffic,"said Jordan Ellis of Max's Wine Dive on San Jacinto. That's why the city created the "Great Streets Development Program". The program gives financial assistance to private developers who would like to improve the city's sidewalks and other enhancements. "Everyone is just going to have to deal with the dust, all the construction and roads being shut down, " Jordan Ellis said. The program is only for the downtown area inside Lamar and Interstate 35, and 11th Street and Cesar Chavez. Any developer in this zone who wants to make improvements for pedestrian walkways, sidewalk cafes, public art or special features can request aid from the city.
