Police are seeking assistance in the death of Jose Humberto Vela, 51, who was found dead inside a Southeast Austin home on April 13. Austin police arrived at the home in the 5300 block of Summer Drive about 3:41 p.m. Homicide detectives were called to the scene and a preliminary investigation found the death suspicious.  An autopsy performed the next day ruled the death a homicide.  Vela's friends said he was politically active and dedicated to his neighborhood and the city around it.  "He was involved in local Austin politics, he was an ISD board member for the longest time," friend Bill O'Leary said. "From what I know he was recently diagnosed with cancer and had to take some time off for chemotherapy. The community is really devastated by his death."  Police are releasing few details about the case, other than to ask for the public's help.
