Texas tops in new homes sales, despite developing problem in Austin

While the new home market in Texas continues to thrive, the Austin market has developed a bit of a hiccup.

Mark Sprague with Independence Title says, when it comes to new home sales nationally, Texas dominates the market.  He says people are flocking to the Austin area, but he says that's also caused a problem.  “We are basically running out of lots and it’s going to take a while to bring lots on line in desirable areas, whether that’s in Leander or whether that’s Austin, going more east, because west is pretty built out.”

When lots are available, Sprague says the homes built on them won't come cheap. He says the median home price in Austin is about $40,000 more than in San Antonio, Houston or Dallas.
