Police horse burned by lit cigarette; man faces felony for it

A police horse burned in the neck with a lit cigarette over the weekend is being treated while the man accused of doing it was taken to jail.

Austin Police Sergeant David Daniels says it happened during a crowd control effort late Saturday night on East Sixth, east of the interstate.

"The horses are used to the downtown area and usually don't jump at anything. This horse moved its head in a violent fashion, so, obviously, it got burned," Daniels said.

Tyrone Branch Junior now faces a state jail felony for interference with a police animal.
