$175,000 Austin homeless sculpture gets support from council members

A larger-than-life, bronze sculpture depicting three homeless figures might be installed in an Austin park, under a plan pitched by an Austin homeless advocate that has the support of at least a few City Council members.  A proposal from Council Members Mike Martinez, Laura Morrison and Sheryl Cole that the council will consider Thursday would direct city staffers to identify several possible sites for the sculpture in “prominent areas within the parks system, including … Auditorium Shores.”  City parks officials had previously reviewed plans for the sculpture and objected to putting it at Auditorium Shores. They said the piece, which would have a base that is about 17 feet by 8 feet wide, could cause environmental harm to tree roots and the Lady Bird Lake shoreline.
