Advocates aren't satisfied with preliminary maps drawn for Austin's new voting districts

The first preliminary maps for Geographic Representation have been drawn, and some groups are already calling "foul".

Austinites for Geographic Representation, one of the groups who pushed for the 10-1 method of electing city council, has sent a letter saying the Commission responsible for drawing the maps has listened to two month’s worth of public input, then ignored it. One complaint is that they are not paying enough attention to minority neighborhoods, which might violate the Voting Rights Act, something legal expert Steve Bickerstaff says they cannot do, "I try to emphasize that the decision by the Supreme Court (of the United States) this summer does not relieve the obligation of this commission to meet the voting rights act."

AGR is calling for their supporters to come out to tomorrow’s meeting to let the commission know what they think.
