A Smithville Junior High Student has been taken to Dell Children's Medical Center, following a suicide attempt on campus. According to a statement from the Superintendent:
It is with a sad heart that we announce that a tragedy has occurred today at Smithville Junior High.
Today a student was seriously injured due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The student has been transported to an Austin area hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. All other students and staff are safe. Parents have been coming to the school to pick up their children and parents may continue to do so if they so choose.
This afternoon we will have adults accompany students home if they are riding the bus. We also have additional and specially trained counselors available on hand for the remainder of the week and as long as necessary, to support our students and staff.
At this time we plan to resume school tomorrow.
We would like to share our appreciation with the Region 13 Education Service Center for their support; as well as local churches, agencies, citizens, and neighboring school districts who have offered prayers and support during this difficult time. We cherish our students and will continue to be here to provide support and love during this tragic time.
Now if you will excuse me I need to get back to the students and staff.
Dr. Rock McNulty, Superintendent
