Violent crime is up but Austin is still one of the safest cities in the U.S.

Austin's police chief is welcoming new numbers from the feds which paint the Capitol City as the third safest town of over 500-thousand people in the United States. But, police Chief Art Acevedo says a 17-percent rise in violent crime downtown is unacceptable and believes it is happening because of the amount of alcohol sold in the entertainment district.

Acevedo says last year, Austin was the fifth safest city relating to violent crime. He says the HALO cameras and using crime analysis software to put officers in high-crime areas are two ways his staff is being efficient with resources.
