Area Command at the Austin/Travis County Emergency Operations Center is activated and will continue until Monday evening, as will other Command Posts for Downtown, Circuit of the Americas (COTA), Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and the Capitol. This is the third full day into the activation. Today Area Command is expecting and preparing for larger crowds due to the final race.

TxDot and DPS have added additional signage to assist drivers headed to the Expo Center.

Only pre-paid parking is available at COTA.

For those returning from the track by personal vehicle, consider SH 21 as an alternate route to SH 130 or IH 35.

For safety reasons, no pedestrian traffic is allowed along the roadways near the track, citations are being issued by Travis County deputies.

Pearce Lane: Sunday morning, expect all lanes to be eastbound (inbound to the Circuit of Americas), east of SH 130. After the race, afternoon traffic will be reversed outbound, with all lanes westbound.

FM 812: Sunday morning, prior to the race, drivers should expect three lanes leading from SH130 to COTA Blvd, eastbound, with one lane westbound. In the afternoon, after the races, drivers should expect this to be reversed with three lanes westbound and one lane eastbound.

As F1 reaches a crescendo, a traffic test remains

Formula One’s inaugural lap in Austin couldn’t ask for anything more: clear skies, big crowds and a Grand Prix on Sunday that could crown a world champion.   But most important for Circuit of the Americas organizers, Saturday delivered few speed bumps to an elaborate plan to move thousands of fans to and from the track, in a rural area southeast of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

More than 100,000 spectators are expected to attend the 1 p.m. race on Sunday, and most will be leaving more or less directly after the finish, possibly creating long lines for shuttle buses and bottlenecks on the county roads surrounding the circuit. After the race, country music singer Clay Walker, among others, will perform, which circuit officials hope will slow the rush for the exits.

But more than 83,000 fans reached the track Saturday morning and left in the afternoon with relative ease. The only transportation hiccup appeared in the morning with delays of up to an hour reaching the Travis County Exposition Center, the largest of the park-and-ride shuttle bus stops.
