For undocumented immigrants, federal program means more normal life

Soon after Michell Mendez Medina got her letter, she took the test to get her driver’s license — a decade after all her friends got theirs. Ana Ortiz got her letter on Halloween and now plans to apply for college and coach her son’s basketball team.  Mendez, a 26-year-old from Honduras who lives in Round Rock, and Ortiz, a 25-year-old from Mexico, both said the letter they received from the federal government – which gives them temporary permission to stay in the country under a program that President Barack Obama announced in June — brought them out of the shadows.  “I was very, very, very excited,” said Ortiz, who lives in La Grange with her husband and their two children. “I texted all my cousins.”
