A group of Texas mental health care advocates say the best way to combat school shootings or other mass violence is better mental health treatment.
The group says the funding for those who need mental health treatment has been more than cut in half since 1999. State Senator Royce West says those who are not getting treatment are showing up in the court system, "Look at the number of individuals who are going into the jail to get mental health services."
West is calling for increased funding for mental health, as well as substance abuse and housing and he's not alone. He's hearing from others who believe spending money on mental health treatment now can prevent violence in the future.
