A $2 million plan to deploy rentable bikes across downtown Austin could get the go ahead today from city council. The city's bicycle program coordinator, Annick Beaudet says her staff believes it will be a good thing for the city, "We're interested in how it could help with rapid bus, or regular bus, or rail."

Beaudet tells us she's getting criticism from cyclists that San Antonio had a system like that before Austin, and also criticism from non-cyclists that it's too expensive.
