The state is putting together big plans to handle traffic along I-35 in Austin and points north and south.
But the plans stop short of any extreme makeovers. The transportation department's Terry McCoy says these plans are not so much about putting more vehicles on the highway as the are about improving the reliability of travel on I-35.
McCoy says they want to get as much capacity as they can out of the frontage roads and that includes building new u-turn lanes at overpasses which right now do not have them.
McCoy does admit that there is no easy way to make big improvements right now, but he hopes completing multiple small jobs will have an impact. He says adding new auxiliary lanes, turnaround bridges and ramps are things they're considering with the new plans for the next five years.
The department of transportation is spending millions on studies from Georgetown to San Marcos.
