A Central Texas congressman says the U.S. Senate amnesty proposal is a mistake.

Republican Congressman Lamar Smith says he's not surprised by the move, given that senators supported amnesty several years ago, and he says it's essentially the same individuals. He says he's disappointed by what it will do to America's interests, "It's going to be hugely expensive to American taxpayers when you have 10 million people suddenly become eligible for government benefits."  

Smith says it'll also cost American workers thousands of jobs and depress their wages. And he says it'll also encourage more illegal immigration and isn't fair to immigrants who followed the rules to become U.S. citizens.
