The Austin school board approves a measure by a mixed vote to move ahead with creating three single sex campuses. Trustee Cheryl Bradley has been supporting the proposal, "I believe that we can have the leadership capabilities, that we can send our boys and our girls to the next level, knowing that they are stepping on their high school campus prepared to go to the next level."
New Trustee Jayme Mathias approved of moving forward with the proposal, but was one of three board members who did not support transforming two East Austin campuses into single sex schools, "As a champion for diversity on this board, I simply think that we need to be thinking about how is it we serve all children, especially those 4 to 14 percent who self identify as being part of the LGBTQ community."
The district will first transform the alternative learning center into an all boys campus at a cost of 20 million dollars. The district will model the new schools after the highly successful Ann Richards school for Women Leaders. It's not clear why the community, that was overwhelmingly in favor of the school for girls was not as positive about creating a campus for boys.
