Travis county bans all tobacco on county property, both in and out doors

Travis County commissioners vote unanimously to ban all tobacco use on county property and it goes into effect April 7th.

The ban covers smoking, chewing tobacco and a product sometimes marketed to get around smoking bans, e-cigarettes. The ban covers parks, parking garages and other indoor and outdoor properties including Travis County Expo Center.

Several other local large employers also ban tobacco on their property including Dell, Samsung, the Seton Family of Hospitals and St. David’s HealthCare. Dell reports the proportion of its employees who smoked dropped from 13 to 3 percent in the years after banning smoking. However County officials say they don't expect any enforcement of the ban beyond posting signs, estimated to cost just over 8-thousand dollars. The city of Austin is picking up most of that bill.
