Troubles brewing when it comes to Austin's air quality and EPA regulations.
Austin Transportation Department's Pharr Andrews says Austin ozone levels, mostly caused by traffic, are the biggest problem, "We're just tetering on the edge of non-attainment, so two or three special events, like F-1 type events, could push us over that line. So what we're recommending here is that we require large special events have air quality mitigation plans."
That includes the Formula-1 race. Andrews says another recommendation is spending more money on public awareness campaigns to let Austinites know how they can help. The current E-P-A ozone standard is 75 parts-per billion, but it could drop to 60 by November of this year. Austin's level currently hovers at 74 parts-per-billion.
