When Blake Tollett saw the draft map of 10 Austin City Council districts drawn recently by a citizens commission, he was startled. His West Austin neighborhood of Tarrytown is part of a skinny district that runs up MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) to Howard Lane in far North Austin. “It looks very odd to me,” he said. “I thought the whole idea was to keep neighborhoods with common concerns together.” Tarrytown is one of Austin’s wealthiest areas; does it really share an affinity with middle-class neighborhoods near Pflugerville? The commission will grapple with such questions when it begins revising the map later this month and tries to complete a final map in December. First, it will hold four public hearings to receive feedback.
