Holidays challenging for people facing domestic abuse

The Christmas holidays are almost upon us and that can prompt some people to become violent.

Domestic violence seems to increase during the holidays when people spend more time together.  Just this past weekend an Austin man was charged in the beating and stabbing death of his wife.  Safe Place Executive Director Julie Spann says it's a tough situation to walk away from, "It is really really hard to live in a shelter and to be away from your family during the holidays.  And so, some of these (women) actually have been with us, we find that some of them actually leave during the holidays because they are seeking what feels normal do them."

According to police, Elizabeth Tamez reported in January 2012, her husband Jesus had pointed a gun at her and she feared for her life.  A protective order was issued, but it expired two months later.
