Gonzalez family exiting Congress after 50 years

12/17/2012

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - One of the most prominent families in Texas politics is saying goodbye to Congress after more than half a century.

U.S. Rep. Charlie Gonzalez is serving his final days in Washington after 14 years representing his San Antonio district. The Democrat followed in the footsteps of his famous father, Henry B. Gonzalez, who held the job for nearly four decades.

Charlie Gonzalez is preparing for an "encore career" outside politics after deciding to not seek an eighth term. Gonzalez was chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Replacing Gonzalez is former state lawmaker Joaquin Castro, whose family has its own pedigree. Castro's twin brother is San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, a rising Democratic star on the national stage.
