LAREDO, Texas (AP) - A Mexican national has been sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison for illegally transporting immigrants and assaulting U.S. Border Patrol agents.
Jose Alberto Izquierdo-Gonzalez was sentenced Wednesday in the South Texas town of Laredo. The 28-year-old, who was living in the U.S. illegally, had entered a guilty plea in March to a variety of charges.
Prosecutors say Border Patrol agents in January saw Izquierdo-Gonzalez loading immigrants in the country illegally into his pickup. He sped away when he saw the agents, endangering many passengers who were in the bed of the pickup.
He eventually rammed one of the Border Patrol vehicles, injuring an agent, before losing control of his truck.
Izquierdo-Gonzalez had prior convictions for assaulting agents in 2008 and illegally transporting immigrants in 2009.
