San Antonio officer shot; 2 arrested.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A San Antonio police officer has been shot in the head and critically wounded during a car chase involving what authorities say were armed robbery suspects.

The officer, a seven-year veteran of the department, is in intensive care at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Two men were taken into custody after daybreak Sunday in a rural area south of the city in neighboring Wilson County as police using tracking dogs and helicopters joined the hunt.

The case began with a store robbery. Authorities say about two hours later, a car believed involved in the holdup was spotted in south San Antonio. The people in the vehicle took off and officers gave chase down Interstate 37. Eventually, gunfire was exchanged.

The officer was shot at some point with a bullet that went through his car's windshield and he crashed.
