Former El Paso schools official sentenced

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A former El Paso school board member has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for accepting more than $176,000 in bribes.

The U.S. Attorney's office said that U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo sentenced former El Paso Independent School District Trustee Salvador "Sal" Mena on Monday. The judge also ordered Mena to forfeit $176,455.

Mena had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and deprivation of honest services. Mena accepted bribes from school district vendors in exchange for his support of their contracts. Mena told vendors to make contributions to his election campaigns.
