South Texas deputies shoot man dead after chase


   CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - A 51-year-old South Texas tree surgeon is dead, shot by deputies after a he was seen dousing himself with gasoline.

   The Bee County Sheriff's Office identified the man as Jerry De La Garza, owner of De La Garza Tree Service in Beeville. Sheriff's Lt. Ronnie Jones tells the Corpus Christi Caller-Times ( the Saturday afternoon episode began when a deputy in nearby Live Oak County reported a man dousing himself with gasoline while driving along U.S. 59.

   Bee County deputies picked up the trail and tried to stop the sport utility vehicle, but it rammed a deputy's vehicle instead. Jones says deputies opened fire on the vehicle, killing De La Garza. Jones says the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a Texas Rangers investigation
