Man convicted of 1993 deaths to have bond hearing

1/14/2014

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A West Texas man convicted of killing two people as a teenager in 1993 is scheduled to have a bond hearing after the state ordered he should have a new trial.

The bond hearing is set for Tuesday for Daniel Villegas, sentenced in 1995 to life in prison in the deaths of two teenagers during a drive-by shooting in El Paso.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled in December that Villegas should be granted a new trial due to ineffective defense, but also said he hasn't proven his innocence.

Villegas' first trial resulted in a hung jury after his attorney called 18 witnesses. His attorney in the second trial called one and, in a 2011 hearing, said he had little time to prepare.
