Texas prison gang leader gets prison in drug case

HOUSTON (AP) - A leader of a gang that started in Texas prisons has been sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to distribution of heroin.

A federal judge in Houston sentenced 37-year-old Eric Gomez of San Antonio to 12 years and seven months in prison on Tuesday. Gomez had entered his guilty plea Sept. 11.

Prosecutors describe Gomez as a general in the Texas Mexican Mafia prison gang. Investigators say Gomez was behind the sale of more than 12 pounds of heroin to an FBI confidential source since late 2011.

Gomez was among more than two dozen alleged gang members charged in the fall of 2012 with running drugs and gun violations to support the group's violent activity. Of the 26 charged, 22 have entered guilty pleas.
