FCC member studies Texas 911 dialing case

1/16/2014

DALLAS (AP) - A Texas grandfather's initiative to allow hotel guests to dial 911 without having to press 9 first has received attention from a federal official who's asking the nation's major hotel chains for more information.

Hank Hunt's 9-year-old granddaughter was unable to call for help while her mother was stabbed to death.

The story has spurred Federal Communications Commission member Ajit Pai to send letters to 10 major American hotel chains about 911 dialing.

The letters ask whether guests dialing 911 are directly connected to an emergency call center or a hotel employee.

Pai tells The Associated Press a response to the letters are voluntary and he hopes to collect more information about how common it is for hotel guests not being able to dial 911 directly.
