School district vote on water dispute delayed

MCALLEN, Texas (AP) - The school board in a small South Texas town has postponed until Saturday its decision on what water rate plan to accept to keep the water service going at its schools.

Students returned to classes in the La Villa (VEE'-yah) school district on Thursday after a winter break was extended by three days because of a dispute over its water bill.

The day before, a state agency refused to intervene in the district between the district and the La Villa City Commission, forcing both sides back into negotiations.

La Villa municipal leaders met Wednesday, conveying options for a compromise to the school district. The city says the district owes about $58,000 on its bill because it has refused to pay a higher rate set in December 2012.
